“Shirodhara: Ancient Ayurvedic Therapy for Mind and Body”

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that has been practiced for centuries as a means of promoting physical and mental well-being. Rooted in the holistic principles of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, shirodhara involves the gentle pouring of a continuous stream of warm oil or other liquids onto the forehead, specifically targeting the “third eye” area. This therapy is believed to have numerous benefits for both the body and mind, making it a popular choice for those seeking relaxation, stress relief, and overall rejuvenation.

Benefits and Considerations:

Shirodhara is a classical and a well-established ayurvedic procedure of slowly and steadily dripping medicated oil or other liquids on the forehead. This procedure induces a relaxed state of awareness that results in a dynamic psycho-somatic balance.

  • Awakens Intutions
  • Pacifies Vata Dosha

The Shirodhara Process:

The shirodhara therapy involves the following steps:

  1. Preparation: The individual lies on a comfortable massage table, typically in a relaxed and meditative state.

  2. Oil Selection: A specific type of oil is chosen based on the individual’s dosha constitution and any existing imbalances. Different oils may be used, each with its own therapeutic properties.

  3. Warm Oil Flow: A vessel filled with warm oil is suspended above the forehead, allowing a continuous and gentle stream of oil to flow onto the “third eye” area, located between the eyebrows. The oil is poured at a steady rhythm, promoting relaxation and deep inner calm.

  4. Duration: The therapy session typically lasts for about 30 to 60 minutes, during which the individual experiences a state of deep relaxation.

  5. Benefits: Shirodhara is believed to have a range of benefits, including stress reduction, improved sleep, enhanced mental clarity, and relief from anxiety and tension. The warm oil also nourishes the scalp and hair.

  6. Aftercare: After the session, the oil is gently wiped off, and it’s recommended to rest and avoid exposure to strong winds or cold temperatures for a few hours to allow the body to absorb the benefits of the therapy.

A typical Shirodhara session would last 30 to 60 minutes as per doctor advice and is done for 3, 7, 14, or 28 days.

It's important that the channels of the body are clear prior to receiving shirodhara so it's requested that you not eat 60 minutes before your appointment.

Proper sleep and Shirodhara (a part of Panchakarma therapy) are suggested for a speedy improvement. Ayurveda not only provides a natural method of treating Vertigo, but helps for mind and Body balance with Shirodhara .
